Pence reprende a Trump y dice que estaba «orgulloso» de certificar el resultado de las elecciones
El exvicepresidente Mike Pence usó un discurso el jueves por la noche para ir mucho más lejos que antes en público para reprender los esfuerzos de Donald Trump para revertir la derrota republicana en las elecciones presidenciales de 2020, al tiempo que agregó que «siempre estará orgulloso» de jugar su parte para certificar la victoria de Joe Biden.
El Congreso de los Estados Unidos, con Pence presidiendo el Senado, confirmó el resultado de las elecciones en la madrugada del 7 de enero después de la mortífera insurrección del día anterior por parte de los extremistas partidarios de Trump, poco después de que el entonces presidente los hubiera instado a «luchar como el infierno» para revirtió su derrota y presionó a Pence para que no certificara la victoria de Biden.
“Siempre estaré orgulloso de haber hecho nuestra parte en ese trágico día para volver a convocar el Congreso y haber cumplido con nuestro deber bajo la constitución y las leyes de los Estados Unidos”, dijo Pence en un discurso en California.
Señaló que el vicepresidente no tiene poder constitucional para descartar un resultado presidencial presentado al Congreso de los Estados Unidos por los estados, o devolver los votos a los estados en rechazo.
Pence contradijo a «aquellos en nuestro partido» que piensan que «cualquier persona» podría elegir al presidente, sin mencionar directamente a Trump.
“La verdad es que casi no hay idea más antiestadounidense que la noción de que cualquier persona podría elegir al presidente estadounidense”, dijo.
Llamó a la insurrección como un “día oscuro en la historia del Capitolio de los Estados Unidos”, tras el cual 500 personas han sido arrestadas en la mayor investigación criminal estadounidense desde los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001.
El discurso del republicano de Indiana se pronunció en la biblioteca presidencial de Ronald Reagan en Simi Valley. Pence demostró que todavía se apega a las políticas de Trump que lealmente ayudó a elaborar y promover durante la administración Trump-Pence. También parecía estar trazando su camino hacia una posible candidatura a la presidencia.
Trump persiste en sus afirmaciones de que las elecciones le fueron «robadas» debido a un fraude generalizado, a pesar del fracaso de más de 80 impugnaciones judiciales, y recientemente le dijo a un entrevistador que «nunca admitió la derrota» y que estaba «muy decepcionado de que [Pence] no lo devolvió a las legislaturas ”en los estados, rechazando efectivamente el resultado.
En su discurso, Pence reconoció su «decepción» por la derrota de noviembre, con los demócratas Biden y Kamala Harris ganando de manera decisiva.
«Ahora, entiendo la decepción que muchos sienten por las últimas elecciones», dijo. «Puedo relacionar. Yo estaba en la boleta. Pero ya sabes, hay más en juego que nuestro partido y nuestra fortuna política en este momento. Si perdemos la fe en la constitución, no perderemos simplemente las elecciones, perderemos nuestro país ”, dijo.
Elogió los logros de la «administración Trump-Pence» en el cargo e instó a su partido a aprovechar las «prioridades conservadoras tradicionales», así como los «nuevos pilares» de la política populista de Trump. Llamó a Trump un disruptor «único en su clase» que también «fortaleció nuestro movimiento» de la misma manera que lo hizo Ronald Reagan en la década de 1980.
Mientras tanto, un extracto adicional del próximo libro Nightmare Scenario de dos periodistas del Washington Post afirma que si Trump se hubiera incapacitado o murió de Covid-19 el otoño pasado, no había planes en la Casa Blanca para jurar a Pence.
Según la Ley de Sucesión Presidencial, Pence habría asumido la presidencia si Trump hubiera muerto.
El libro tiene más detalles de cómo Trump estaba mucho más enfermo de lo que se reconoció oficialmente.
