El ex papa Benedicto está «muy enfermo», dice el papa Francisco
El papa Francisco ha dicho que su predecesor, el papa Benedicto, el ex pontífice de 95 años que renunció al cargo hace nueve años, está “muy enfermo” tras el deterioro de su salud el miércoles.
“Quiero pedirles a todos una oración especial por el Papa Emérito Benedicto que sostiene a la Iglesia en su silencio. Está muy enfermo”, dijo Francisco durante su audiencia general en el Vaticano el miércoles.
“Pedimos al Señor que lo consuele y lo sostenga en este testimonio de amor a la Iglesia hasta el final”.
Un portavoz del Vaticano confirmó más tarde que “en las últimas horas ha habido un deterioro debido al avance de la edad (de Benedicto)”.
“La situación en este momento permanece bajo control y supervisada continuamente por sus médicos”, dijo el portavoz, Matteo Bruni, y agregó que Francisco visitó a su predecesor en el monasterio Mater Ecclesiae en la Ciudad del Vaticano después de su audiencia general.
En 2013, el Papa Benedicto XVI conmocionó al mundo al tomar la decisión casi sin precedentes de renunciar a su cargo alegando “edad avanzada”.
El anuncio de Benedicto marcó la primera vez que un Papa renunció en casi 600 años. El último Papa en renunciar antes de su muerte fue Gregorio XII, quien en 1415 renunció para poner fin a una guerra civil dentro de la Iglesia Católica en la que más de un hombre pretendía ser Papa.
En 2020, el Vaticano dijo que Benedicto XVI había sufrido una “condición dolorosa pero no grave”, luego de que los medios alemanes informaran que estaba enfermo.
Dos años antes, en una rara carta pública publicada en el periódico italiano Corriere della Sera, Benedicto escribió que “en el lento declive de mis fuerzas físicas, interiormente estoy en una peregrinación hacia el Hogar”.
El legado de Benedicto se ha visto empañado por el escrutinio reciente de su tiempo como arzobispo de Munich y Freising, entre 1977 y 1982, luego de que en enero se publicara un informe encargado por la Iglesia sobre abusos por parte del clero católico.
El informe encontró que había sido informado de cuatro casos de abuso sexual que involucraban a menores, incluidos dos durante su estadía en Munich, pero no actuó, y que había asistido a una reunión sobre un sacerdote abusivo.
Benedicto luego rechazó esas acusaciones, admitiendo que había asistido a la reunión pero negando que haya ocultado su presencia intencionalmente.
