Se proyecta que esa tendencia aumente a medida que las temperaturas promedio continúen aumentando, pero podría revertirse si los humanos pueden reducir las emisiones de carbono, dicen los alergólogos.
“La intensidad de los síntomas ha aumentado, lo que significa que lo que solía responder a tal vez solo una pastilla usada esporádicamente ahora requiere absolutamente una pastilla para la alergia, pero también tal vez un aerosol nasal antiinflamatorio con esteroides”, dijo el Dr. John Costa, director médico. de la división de alergia e inmunología clínica del hospital Brigham and Women’s de Boston.

Afortunadamente, dijo Costa, ahora hay varios colirios efectivos para las alergias de venta libre, como el ketotifeno y la olopatadina, que anteriormente solo estaban disponibles con receta.
Para abordar el empeoramiento de la temporada de alergias, EE. UU. también necesita más estaciones para medir la cantidad de polen, dijo Anderegg. Mientras que hay miles de estaciones que miden los niveles de ozono y contaminantes del aire, algunos estados solo tienen una estación de polen o ninguna, dijo.
Eso se debe a que no ha habido suficientes fondos para las estaciones y el polen es más difícil de medir.

Esos datos también podrían ayudar con los sistemas de alerta temprana para que las personas puedan anticipar mejor un brote de sus alergias, dijo.
En cuanto a lo que depara el futuro para las alergias, Anderegg se siente alentado por los informes de que el peor de los casos para el cambio climático ahora se considera poco probable.
“Al planificar para los próximos cinco, 10, 15 años, deberíamos esperar que las temporadas de polen sigan empeorando”, dijo Anderegg.
Pero es optimista de que la sociedad seguirá avanzando en la reducción de las emisiones de carbono y frenará esa tendencia.
Para Burkett, sus síntomas de alergia han llegado al punto en que él y su esposa planearon un viaje en abril a la costa de Carolina del Norte para escapar del polen.
