Los sirios votan elecciones que aseguran un cuarto mandato para Bashar Al Asad

Miles de sirios salieron a los colegios electorales de un país devastado por la guerra para emitir sus votos este miércoles, en elecciones descartadas como una farsa y garantizadas para otorgar al presidente Bashar Assad un cuarto mandato de siete años.
La legitimidad de la votación fue desafiada por una multitud de sirios que vivían fuera de las áreas controladas por el gobierno, que se manifestaron para denunciar lo que llamaron una «obra de teatro» que ignora la realidad del país.
Desgarrada por un conflicto de una década, Siria está dividida en áreas controladas por el gobierno, combatientes rebeldes y tropas extranjeras, todos compitiendo por influencia y recursos.
La mitad de los 23 millones de habitantes de Siria antes de la guerra han sido desplazados, en su mayoría viviendo fuera de áreas controladas por el gobierno donde no votarán. Más de 5 millones fueron expulsados y viven en países vecinos donde no se lleva a cabo la votación. Los enfrentamientos han dejado casi medio millón de muertos y cientos de miles detenidos o desaparecidos.
Los países occidentales descartaron la elección como ilegítima, diciendo que viola las resoluciones de la ONU adoptadas para resolver la crisis a través de negociaciones entre el gobierno y grupos de oposición.
Assad respondió a las críticas diciendo que aquellos que descartan el voto como ilegítimo tienen «historia colonial».
«Nosotros, como estado, no estamos preocupados por tales declaraciones», dijo Assad después de emitir su voto en el suburbio de Douma en Damasco, donde llegó con su esposa Asma, conduciendo su propio automóvil.
El área fue uno de los principales bastiones rebeldes hasta que fue retomada por las fuerzas gubernamentales en 2018. Fue escenario de un presunto ataque con gas venenoso en abril de 2018 que desencadenó ataques por parte de Estados Unidos, Reino Unido y Francia.
