Científicos descubren un mensajero secreto entre la grasa y el cerebro
Los científicos pensaron que entendían cómo nuestros cerebros controlaban los niveles de grasa en nuestros cuerpos: al monitorear las hormonas asociadas con la grasa en nuestro torrente sanguíneo.
Pero en un nuevo estudio, los investigadores ahora descubrieron un sistema de mensajería adicional completo.
Resulta que tenemos todo un sistema sensorial dedicado a llevar mensajes desde nuestros tejidos grasos (adiposos) a nuestros cerebros.
«El descubrimiento de estas neuronas sugiere por primera vez que su cerebro está examinando activamente su grasa, en lugar de recibir mensajes pasivamente al respecto», dice el neurocientífico del Instituto de Investigación Scripps, Li Ye.
«Las implicaciones de este hallazgo son profundas».
Comprender este sistema podría algún día ayudar a un número cada vez mayor de personas que luchan contra el peso y sus problemas de salud asociados, como enfermedades cardíacas y diabetes.

Si bien los investigadores saben desde hace mucho tiempo que la grasa de los mamíferos está plagada de neuronas, estos nervios se vincularon en modelos animales con el sistema nervioso simpático de los mamíferos, el sistema que rige las respuestas automáticas e inconscientes de nuestro cuerpo, como aumentar el ritmo cardíaco o dilatar los ojos.
Promueven la descomposición de la grasa para su uso durante la actividad física, el hambre y otras tensiones.
Pero si bien se han establecido estos mensajes que van del cerebro a nuestra grasa, quedan preguntas sobre qué señalización está sucediendo en la dirección inversa dentro de nuestros nervios.
«Cuando comenzamos este proyecto, no había herramientas existentes para responder a estas preguntas», explica el neurocientífico del Instituto de Investigación Scripps, Yu Wang.
Así que Wang y sus colegas desarrollaron las herramientas, incluida una nueva técnica de imagen llamada HYBRiD y un método de manipulación celular dirigido llamado ROOT para superar las dificultades técnicas de llegar a las neuronas en lo profundo de la grasa de nuestro cuerpo sin estropearlas.
Los investigadores diseñaron HYBRiD (tejido de mamífero aclarado reforzado con hidrogel) para permitir un examen minucioso de grandes muestras intactas de tejido. Utiliza disolventes para eliminar las moléculas que dan a los tejidos su opacidad, lo que da como resultado tejidos transparentes que aún conservan su configuración original.
Agregar proteínas fluorescentes que se dirigen a tipos de tejidos específicos permite a los investigadores obtener imágenes claras de sus estructuras de interés.
Las visualizaciones resultantes permitieron a Wang y su equipo ver claramente que casi la mitad de las neuronas adiposas no se conectaban al sistema nervioso simpático sino al sistema nervioso sensorial.
Luego utilizaron ROOT (vector retrógrado optimizado para el rastreo de órganos) para atacar y destruir selectivamente diferentes subconjuntos de neuronas en ratones.
La pérdida de la señal de la neurona sensorial condujo a más grasa en los ratones, con niveles particularmente altos de grasa parda. Los ratones también tenían temperaturas corporales más altas, lo que tiene sentido porque la grasa parda ayuda a nuestros cuerpos a convertir otras grasas y azúcares en calor.
Los investigadores concluyeron que su sistema de neuronas sensoriales recién identificado debe estar actuando para regular las señales del sistema nervioso simpático, instruyendo al cuerpo para que queme nuestra grasa, rechazándolas o apagándolas.
«Esto nos dice que no existe una instrucción única de que [el] cerebro envía tejido adiposo», dice Li.
«Es más matizado que eso; estos dos tipos de neuronas actúan como un acelerador y un freno para quemar grasa».
El equipo sospecha que estos nervios también podrían desempeñar un papel crucial en la interocepción: las percepciones de las sensaciones que provienen del interior de nuestros cuerpos, como es el caso de neuronas similares que se encuentran dentro de otros órganos. Pero aún tienen que investigar esto y están ansiosos por investigar más a fondo este sistema.
