Brasil supera las 250.000 muertes por covid-19 y Latinoamérica avanza en la vacunación
El país vive una segunda ola de la pandemia desde noviembre, en medio de una flexibilización del aislamiento social, y una incipiente campaña de vacunación.
El gigante sudamericano superó este jueves los 250.000 decesos por coronavirus, en un total de más de 2,5 millones en el mundo, mientras sigue la carrera por las vacunas en el país y el resto del continente.
Un año después de reportar el primer caso, Brasil es la segunda nación con el mayor número de muertos, con 251.498, 1.541 registrados por el Ministerio de Salud en las últimas 24 horas.
El país, que ya supera los 10,3 millones de contagios, vive una segunda ola desde noviembre, en medio de una flexibilización del aislamiento social, estimulada por el presidente, Jair Bolsonaro, y una incipiente campaña de vacunación que ha alcanzado hasta ahora a menos del 3% de la población.
Mientras tanto, países de la región avanzan en la búsqueda de vacunas. Ecuador anunció que importará dos millones de dosis de la ampolla de la farmacéutica china Sinovac, para ampliar su plan de inmunización, que empezó en enero, mientras que Bolivia comenzó a vacunar a sus pacientes de riesgo, casi un mes después de haber empezado por el personal sanitario.
Honduras y Guatemala recibieron este jueves unas 10.000 dosis de la vacuna contra el covid-19 del laboratorio estadounidense Moderna, donadas por Israel.
Cuba, por su parte, sigue trabajando en sus proyectos de vacuna propia. Soberana 2 y Abdala, dos de los cuatro inmunizantes en desarrollo en la isla, pasarán en marzo a la fase 3 de ensayos clínicos tras demostrar «seguridad y una potente respuesta inmunológica», según los responsables científicos.
Estados Unidos hizo además un llamado este jueves a los países del G20 a aumentar la ayuda a los países pobres para mejorar el acceso a las vacunas como forma de estimular la economía mundial.
