Miles de personas desplazadas por las inundaciones en los campamentos de rohinyás de Bangladesh
La Organización de Naciones Unidas y otros funcionarios dijeron este viernes que las fuertes lluvias monzónicas en el sureste de Bangladesh provocaron deslizamientos de tierra e inundaciones repentinas que desplazaron a miles de musulmanes rohinyás esta semana.
Al menos seis rohingya , incluidos tres niños, murieron en deslizamientos de tierra e inundaciones, mientras que 15 bangladesíes murieron y más de 200.000 quedaron varados por las inundaciones en Cox’s Bazar, dijo Mamunur Rashid, el administrador del distrito.
Casi un millón de rohingya viven en campamentos abarrotados en el distrito fronterizo de Cox’s Bazar, el asentamiento de refugiados más grande del mundo, después de huir de una represión militar en la vecina Myanmar en 2017.
La mayoría de los refugiados viven en chozas hechas de bambú y láminas de plástico que se adhieren a colinas empinadas y desnudas. Imágenes de televisión mostraron casas inundadas y agua fangosa cayendo en cascada por escaleras y laderas. Los niños jugaban en aguas a la altura del pecho.
«Esto es como una pesadilla», dijo Rohinyá Rokeya Begum. «Nunca había visto inundaciones semejantes en los campamentos en cuatro años. Cuando llegó el agua, no había nadie de mi familia en casa para ayudar. Estaba solo, pero podía llevar mis pertenencias a un lugar más seguro. Ahora me quedo con otra familia.»
La Agencia de la ONU para los Refugiados (ACNUR) dijo que más de 21.000 refugiados habían sido «afectados» por las inundaciones, mientras que casi 4.000 refugios habían sido dañados o destruidos.
Detalló que más de 13.000 se vieron obligados a reubicarse en los campamentos, mientras que miles de instalaciones resultaron dañadas, incluidas clínicas de salud y baños. El acceso se ha visto obstaculizado debido a daños en carreteras, caminos y puentes.
Y es probable que las inundaciones empeoren.
«Se esperan fuertes lluvias durante los próximos días y, como tal, es probable que aumenten los desafíos», aseguró Manuel Marques Pereira, subjefe de misión en Bangladesh de la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones de la ONU.
Los refugiados, muchos de ellos aún recuperándose de los incendios masivos que arrasaron los campamentos en marzo, dijeron que los deslizamientos de tierra y las inundaciones dejaron las casas «totalmente cubiertas de barro».
