«Es probable que se produzca otro ataque terrorista en Kabul», advierten los jefes de seguridad nacional a Biden.
El presidente Joe Biden fue advertido el viernes de que es «probable» otro ataque terrorista en Kabul, un día después de que un atacante suicida fuera del aeropuerto de la ciudad mató al menos a 113 personas, incluidos 13 miembros del servicio estadounidense.
La severa advertencia del equipo de seguridad nacional del presidente se produjo cuando Estados Unidos entró en los últimos días de una retirada militar de Afganistán de un mes de duración, en camino de cumplir con el plazo del 31 de agosto de Biden para una retirada total.
En las dos semanas desde la caída de Kabul el 15 de agosto, Estados Unidos y los socios de la coalición han facilitado la evacuación de más de 100,000 personas, incluidos más de 5,000 ciudadanos estadounidenses. El Pentágono dijo el viernes que más de 5,000 miembros del servicio estadounidense están en el terreno en Kabul ayudando con los esfuerzos de evacuación.
«Los próximos días de esta misión serán el período más peligroso hasta la fecha», le dijeron a Biden, según un comunicado de la Casa Blanca.
En respuesta, Biden reafirmó su «aprobación de todas las autoridades que necesitan para llevar a cabo la operación y proteger a nuestras tropas», dijo la Casa Blanca. Los generales confirmaron al presidente que tenían los recursos que creían que necesitaban para hacerlo de manera efectiva.
El general de la Infantería de Marina Kenneth McKenzie, comandante del Comando Central de Estados Unidos, dijo el jueves que es probable que ISIS intente continuar con los ataques antes de que concluyan las evacuaciones.
McKenzie, que supervisa las operaciones militares estadounidenses en la región, dijo que las amenazas contra las fuerzas occidentales y los civiles en el aeropuerto iban desde disparos hasta cohetes y atentados suicidas.
“Entonces, corrientes de amenazas muy, muy reales, lo que llamaríamos tácticas que significan inminentes, podrían ocurrir en cualquier momento”, dijo.
Los comandantes militares también actualizaron a Biden y a la vicepresidenta Kamala Harris el viernes sobre los planes para desarrollar objetivos entre ISIS-K, el grupo disidente de militantes islámicos que se atribuyó la responsabilidad del ataque del jueves.
Biden aludió a estos planes en comentarios que dio el jueves por la noche.
“No perdonaremos. No olvidaremos. Te perseguiremos y te haremos pagar ”, dijo Biden, hablando desde la Casa Blanca.
