UE negociará compra de 1.800 millones de vacunas anticovid contra futuras cepas del virus

La Unión Europea se apresta a iniciar negociaciones para la compra de 1.800 millones de dosis de vacunas de segunda generación contra el covid-19 para poder enfrentar futuras variantes de coronavirus, según declaró a la agencia France-Presse una fuente de la Comisión Europea.
Las dosis adicionales, que según la Comisión provendrían de «un único proveedor», serían entregadas a partir de 2021 y los dos años siguientes, y se sumarían a las 2.600 millones de dosis que la UE ya se ha asegurado para este año y el próximo.
Se trata del plan de preparación de la Comisión Europea para manejar «las próximas etapas» de la pandemia, dijo la fuente, familiarizada con el enfoque adoptado por la jefa de la Comisión, Ursula von der Leyen.
La fuente no explicó a cual «único proveedor» se refería, aunque no puso reparos cuando se le preguntó si era BioNTech/Pfizer, laboratorio que ya acordó adelantar las entregas a la UE de su vacuna primera generación.
«Queremos un gran volumen» de dosis, y «queremos un contrato en firme por 900 millones de dosis y una opción por otros 900 millones», añadió.
Con esas dosis de segunda generación la UE enfrentaría las crecientes preocupaciones a nivel mundial de que las vacunas actuales pueden ver sus efectos atenuados por algunas variantes, como ya parece ser el caso de las variedades detectadas por primera vez en Sudáfrica y Brasil.
La vacuna de próxima generación que la Comisión está buscando comprar «tiene que cubrir todas las variantes que puedan surgir», y «con una producción dentro de Europa y una prioridad para Europa», explicó la fuente.
«Ante las variantes que van a llegar, debemos prepararnos para ofrecerle a la gente nuevas dosis de vacunas, probablemente este año y en los próximos dos años», dijo la fuente europea.
Asimismo, la orden tiene como objetivo anticipar la vacunación masiva de niños y adolescentes en toda la UE.
En el nuevo contrato «será necesario que las dosis entregadas puedan abarcar todas las nuevas variantes que puedan llegar: en lugar de acumular stocks de la misma vacuna, será necesario que la producción se pueda adaptar», añadió.
La UE busca ordenar vacunas basadas en tecnología de ARN mensajero, con el criterio adicional que sean producidas en Europa.
Estos requisitos de hecho favorecen a la vacuna de BioNTech/Pfizer. La UE autorizó dos vacunas de estas características: la de Pfizer/BioNTech y la de Moderna, aunque la capacidad de producción de esta última es sensiblemente inferior a la primera.
