El ensayo de la vacuna Stanford COVID-19 entra en la fase tres

Un nuevo video muestra la primera inyección cuando los médicos de Stanford comienzan el viernes la fase tres del ensayo de la vacuna Johnson and Johnson COVID-19.
«También hago otros estudios clínicos, pero es bueno ayudar con algo que, con suerte, estará disponible en la primavera», dijo el Dr. Phillip Grant, investigador principal del ensayo.
Esta prueba de fase tres se realizará en 180 sitios de todo el mundo con 60.000 participantes, 1.000 de ellos en Stanford. Es un estudio doble ciego, lo que significa que algunos recibirán la vacuna activa mientras que otros recibirán un placebo. Todos serán monitoreados.
«Con suerte, evitará la cantidad total de infecciones, así como la cantidad grave de infecciones», dijo Grant.
Básicamente, la vacuna utiliza un virus del resfriado común para transportar material genético del coronavirus al cuerpo con el objetivo de provocar una respuesta inmunitaria.
«No estarían administrando esto a 60.000 personas si no hubiera un nivel de confianza en lo que están haciendo», dijo Walter Sobba, el primer participante en el ensayo de Stanford.
Sobba es un graduado de Stanford y aspirante a médico.
«Si hay alguna forma en que el voluntariado para participar en esto pueda ser útil para el resto de nuestra comunidad tanto a nivel local como global, estoy muy feliz de participar en eso», dijo.
En la actualidad, hay cuatro vacunas en fase crítica de ensayos en humanos en el país.
Johnson and Johnson’s estuvo brevemente en espera después de que un participante se enfermara. El de Astrazeneca también se detuvo por la misma razón, pero ambos se reanudaron desde entonces.
De hecho, esta semana los investigadores del ensayo Astrazeneca con Oxford dijeron que su vacuna ha demostrado tener una fuerte respuesta inmune en las personas mayores.
Moderna dijo que para fines de este año espera tener aproximadamente 20 millones de dosis para enviar a Estados Unidos, aunque todavía está en la etapa tres.
El Dr. Anthony Fauci dijo que se debería saber más en semanas.
“Las proyecciones que tenemos, que creo y espero que sean razonablemente precisas, son que sabremos en algún momento de diciembre si tenemos o no una vacuna segura y eficaz”, dijo. «Y, en términos prácticos, cuándo podremos implementar esa vacuna».
Las personas en el ensayo de Stanford realizarán una encuesta telefónica cada semana para ver si tienen síntomas. Grant dijo que todavía necesitan más voluntarios.
«En este momento, estamos trabajando con individuos jóvenes y sanos y con individuos mayores sanos», dijo. «Y si no encaja en esa categoría, lo llamaremos cuando pasemos a personas con afecciones crónicas».
Cada uno será monitoreado periódicamente durante dos años, pero los datos sobre si funcionan llegarán mucho antes.
