Un nuevo análisis de sangre puede detectar más de 50 tipos de cáncer, muchos difíciles de detectar a tiempo

Mayo Clinic participó en la investigación de una prueba que puede detectar más de 50 cánceres. Los médicos lo llaman un cambio de juego, informa CBS Minnesota.
«Mi papá era un hombre sano. No tenía ningún factor de riesgo conocido de cáncer», dijo la Dra. Julia Feygin. Feygin perdió a su padre de 40 años por cáncer de páncreas cuando ella tenía 13 años. Diagnosticado en la etapa tres, vivió nueve meses más.
«Creo firmemente que se puede encontrar un propósito en todo lo que sucede», dijo Feygin.
Ahora es parte de un equipo en una empresa con sede en Menlo Park, California llamada GRAIL que está introduciendo el análisis de sangre, llamado Galleri. Ella dice que puede detectar cánceres difíciles de detectar, agresivos y, a menudo, mortales como el de páncreas, ovario y esófago.
«Si los cánceres se pueden detectar temprano, podemos mejorar drásticamente los resultados de los pacientes», dijo Feygin.
Feygin explica que nuestra sangre contiene una firma de ADN. El análisis de sangre rastrea el ADN que arroja una célula cancerosa.
Se extraen dos tubos de sangre y se envían al laboratorio de GRAIL para su análisis.
«Podemos encontrar y secuenciar estos pequeños fragmentos de ADN derivado de tumores en la sangre y, basándonos en los patrones que vemos, podemos revelar si hay una señal de cáncer presente. Podemos predecir con muy alta precisión en qué parte del cuerpo se la señal del cáncer viene «, dijo Feygin.
Los resultados se envían al proveedor de atención médica en 10 días hábiles.
Un estudio de intervención que incluyó a Mayo Clinic con 6.600 participantes arrojó 29 señales seguidas de un diagnóstico de cáncer.
Otro estudio encontró una tasa de falsos positivos de menos del 1%.
Hay algunas advertencias sobre quién puede hacerse la prueba.
«Está destinado a personas con un riesgo elevado de cáncer. Esto puede ser algo tan simple como la edad», dijo Feygin.
En este momento, la prueba es solo con receta. El seguro no lo cubre. Pagaría de su bolsillo con un costo actual de $ 949.
«En el año 2021, esto va mucho más allá de cualquier otra cosa que hayamos podido hacer. Esto es un cambio de juego», dijo el Dr. Greg Plotnikoff.
Ha prescrito la prueba para pacientes y familiares con factores de riesgo, diciendo que los cánceres detectados temprano se encuentran en etapas más tratables.
«Si podemos captar las cosas antes, tenemos la oportunidad de hacer una diferencia significativa», dijo Plotnikoff.
También eligió hacerse una pantalla a sí mismo, ya que tiene más de 60 años.

La Sociedad Estadounidense del Cáncer dice que el 71% de las muertes por cáncer provienen de tipos de cáncer que no tienen una detección recomendada.
Feygin dice que esperan cambiar los resultados para familias como la suya en el futuro.
«Realmente presenta una oportunidad sin precedentes para doblar la curva de mortalidad por cáncer y realmente salvar tantas vidas», dijo Feygin.
GRAIL dice que Galleri «pretende ser un complemento, y no un reemplazo, de la detección del cáncer recomendada por las pautas de EE. UU.».
GRAIL todavía está trabajando en la aprobación total de la FDA. Puede pedirle a su médico que solicite la prueba.
Antes de fin de año, Galleri estará disponible en las ubicaciones de Mayo Clinic en Rochester, Minnesota, Jacksonville, Florida y Phoenix. También estará disponible en los sitios del Sistema de Salud de Mayo Clinic en el sur de Minnesota y Wisconsin.
